Reserve Bank of Australia Minutes and Labour Force Data to Influence Monetary Policy

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is set to release the minutes from its September policy meeting on October 13, 2026, at 11:30 am Sydney time (00:30 GMT). This release follows the RBA's decision to raise the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60%, marking the fourth increase in the current cycle. The unanimous decision was driven by persistent inflation, which the RBA attributed to domestic capacity strains and global shocks, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the surge in artificial intelligence investments.

In addition to the minutes, the RBA will also publish September's labour force figures on October 15, which are expected to provide further insights into the Australian economy. Analysts predict a modest increase of around 20,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 4.6%. However, some forecasts suggest a smaller gain of 10,000 jobs, with potential upward pressure on the unemployment rate due to a rising participation rate.

The recent increase in interest rates has impacted consumer sentiment, with Westpac's index showing a 4.7% decline in October, nearing historical lows. The Australian dollar has also faced downward pressure amid geopolitical tensions, particularly from the Middle East, which has affected demand for risk-sensitive currencies. Market analysts are closely watching the RBA's communications for indications of future monetary policy direction, particularly in light of the recent rate hike and its implications for the economy.
