Australia's Economic Outlook: RBA Minutes and Job Data to Shape Future Policy

This week, Australia will focus on two key economic indicators that could influence the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) monetary policy direction. The minutes from the RBA's September policy meeting, scheduled for release on Tuesday, will provide insights into the board's decision to raise the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60%. This marked the fourth increase in the current cycle, with the board citing persistent inflation and external pressures, particularly from the Middle East, as significant factors in their decision-making process.

The RBA's Governor Michele Bullock has adopted a softer tone following the meeting, suggesting that the impact of previous rate hikes will take time to materialize. Analysts from Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) will be scrutinizing the minutes to see if they align with Bullock's dovish remarks. In contrast, Westpac maintains a more aggressive stance, predicting an additional rate hike to 4.85% by December, emphasizing that the minutes will be crucial for market expectations.

On Thursday, the September labour force data is expected to show unemployment remaining steady at 4.6%, the highest rate since late 2021. Westpac forecasts an increase of 20,000 jobs, while CBA anticipates a more modest gain of 10,000. The labour market dynamics are influenced by rising cost-of-living pressures and higher interest rates, which are drawing more individuals into the workforce, thereby keeping supply ahead of demand. This week's data releases will be pivotal in shaping the RBA's future policy decisions and the overall economic outlook for Australia.
