UK Retail Sales Rise Amid Rising Fuel Costs

UK retail sales showed unexpected growth in September, with like-for-like sales increasing by 1.0% year-on-year, surpassing forecasts of 0.7%. Total sales rose by 1.3%, although this figure remains below the 12-month average of 1.5%. The British Retail Consortium reported that food sales rose by 2.5%, while non-food sales saw a minimal increase of just 0.3%. The rise in sales was largely attributed to higher prices rather than increased volume, as households faced significant fuel cost pressures.

A notable factor in the spending increase was a nearly 17% surge in fuel expenditures, driven by record-high diesel prices. This rise in essential spending contributed to a slowdown in overall card spending growth, which fell to 2.0% from 2.1%. Despite the increase in spending at bars, pubs, and clubs, which rose nearly 4% for the fourth consecutive month, consumers remain cautious about their finances, particularly with the upcoming budget announcement on 28 October.

Consumer sentiment remains mixed, with confidence in household finances reaching a seven-month high of 67%. However, 68% of consumers expressed concerns about the potential impact of the budget on their finances, and 30% indicated they are reducing non-essential spending. As the holiday season approaches, the ability of consumers to maintain spending beyond essentials will be tested, especially in light of rising living costs.
