Standard Chartered Launches Custody for Ripple's RLUSD in Dubai

Standard Chartered has initiated institutional custody services for Ripple's dollar-backed stablecoin, RLUSD, through its branch in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). This service is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) and allows eligible clients to hold RLUSD on the XRP Ledger within the bank's digital asset custody infrastructure. The bank's move is part of a broader strategy to expand its offerings in the digital asset space, having provided crypto custody in Dubai since 2024.

In addition to custody services, Standard Chartered is working on a link with LMAX Group, a London-based currency and crypto marketplace, which would enable clients to use RLUSD as trading collateral without transferring the tokens off the bank's books. This arrangement, referred to as collateral mirroring, would allow LMAX to credit the value of RLUSD toward client positions while the tokens remain securely held at Standard Chartered. However, this feature is still pending final documentation, testing, and regulatory approval, with no specific launch date announced.

RLUSD, which Ripple launched in December 2024, is backed by US dollars, US government bonds, and cash equivalents. It has a market value of approximately $2.45 billion, representing less than 1% of the total stablecoin market, which is valued at around $306 billion. The introduction of RLUSD custody and the potential integration with LMAX could influence the competitive landscape for stablecoins, particularly if regulated banks begin offering similar services, potentially attracting institutional clients away from larger tokens.
