Reserve Bank of Australia Raises Interest Rates to 4.60% Amid Inflation Concerns

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has increased its cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60%, as detailed in the minutes from its recent meeting held on September 28-29. The decision was unanimous among board members, who cited several inflation risks that had either materialized or were intensifying since their last assessment in August. These include rising oil prices due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, increased global cost pressures driven by demand for artificial intelligence products, and tighter domestic capacity than previously estimated.

The RBA's board expressed concern that the previous cash rate of 4.35% may not have been sufficiently restrictive to manage inflation effectively. They noted that if the global neutral interest rate is indeed rising, maintaining the previous rate could weaken the Australian dollar and lead to looser financial conditions. The board emphasized the need for a proactive approach to balance inflation and employment goals, especially as inflation has remained above target for an extended period.

In terms of economic indicators, the RBA noted that growth in the June quarter was stronger than anticipated, largely due to significant business investment. However, household consumption has slowed, house prices have declined, and unemployment rose to 4.6% in August. The board acknowledged that returning inflation to target may require accepting slower growth in demand and employment, and they remain prepared to raise rates further if necessary.
