Japan's Wholesale Inflation Remains Elevated at 6.8% Amid Cost Pressures

Japan's corporate goods price index increased by 6.8% year-on-year in September, according to data released by the Bank of Japan. This figure fell short of the market forecast of 7.6% and was lower than August's 7.6% rise. On a monthly basis, prices declined by 0.3%, contrasting with expectations for a 0.5% increase, following a 0.2% drop in August.

Despite the slight miss in the annual inflation rate, the persistent inflationary pressures, particularly from rising import costs, keep market expectations for a near-term interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan alive. The yen-based import price index surged by 24.5% year-on-year, indicating that the weak yen continues to inflate the cost of raw materials imported into Japan, particularly as energy prices remain high due to geopolitical tensions.

The data will be crucial for the Bank of Japan as it prepares to release new growth and inflation forecasts at its upcoming policy meeting. Analysts will be closely monitoring whether companies continue to pass on increased costs to consumers, a key factor that the central bank considers when assessing inflation trends. The central bank's decisions in the near future could influence the yen's value and the overall inflation landscape in Japan.
