IMF Raises Global Growth Forecast Amid AI Investment, Warns of Risks

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has increased its global economic growth forecast for 2026 to 3.1%, up from 3.0% in July, attributing this improvement primarily to robust investments in artificial intelligence (AI). This growth projection, however, remains below the 3.5% growth rate recorded in 2025. The IMF's outlook was released during the annual meetings of finance leaders in Bangkok, Thailand, where it was noted that a narrowing group of countries is driving this expansion, with just 32 nations now accounting for 95% of global growth, a significant decrease from 54 countries in April.

The report highlights that while AI investments are bolstering advanced economies, particularly hardware suppliers in South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, and Thailand, the overall resilience of the global economy is under pressure. The ongoing war in the Middle East and sustained high oil prices, which are projected to average $96 a barrel this year, are contributing to economic challenges. The IMF's deputy research director, Petya Koeva Brooks, indicated that without measures taken to mitigate the oil shock, global growth could have plummeted to 2.5% this year.

The Gulf region is facing severe economic downturns, with Saudi Arabia's economy expected to contract by 3.3% this year, a stark contrast to the previously anticipated growth of 1.7%. Other Gulf nations, including Iraq, Kuwait, and Qatar, are also projected to experience significant contractions. In contrast, India is expected to maintain its position as the fastest-growing major economy, with a growth forecast of 7.0% for both 2026 and 2027. The IMF also cautioned that a sharp decline in AI investment could lead to a 1.1% reduction in global output by 2028, further complicating the economic landscape.
