BlackRock Adjusts Investment Strategy, Moves to Neutral on US Stocks and Increases Treasury Holdings

BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has shifted its investment strategy by downgrading its position on US equities from overweight to neutral. This decision is characterized as a short-term risk-management measure amid a volatile macroeconomic environment. The firm remains optimistic about artificial intelligence (AI) transformation and continues to favor AI-related companies, listed infrastructure, and emerging market equities, despite the equity downgrade.

The adjustment comes as the 10-year Treasury yield approaches 5.25%, a significant increase attributed to rising real interest rates and changing expectations from the Federal Reserve. BlackRock has upgraded its holdings in shorter-term Treasuries to overweight and moved long-term Treasuries to neutral, marking a departure from its underweight stance held for most of the past six years. The firm estimates that yields could rise an additional 75 basis points over the next year before total returns turn negative, indicating a cautious outlook on future interest rate movements.

BlackRock's decision is influenced by recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices, which have led to a reevaluation of Fed tightening expectations. The firm believes that the 160 basis points of additional tightening priced in since January is excessive. As part of its strategy, BlackRock has also trimmed its underweight position in Japanese government bonds and adjusted its stance on US agency mortgage-backed securities to neutral. The firm is poised to reassess its risk exposure as market conditions evolve.
