Interest Rate Expectations Shift Following Recent Events

Recent developments have influenced interest rate expectations among major central banks, with significant implications for monetary policy. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has a 99% probability of a rate hike at its next meeting, with expectations for a total increase of 41 basis points by year-end. Similarly, the Federal Reserve (Fed) is seeing a 71% probability of a rate hike in October, with projections indicating a total increase of 37 basis points by the end of 2027. Other central banks, including the Bank of Canada (BoC) and the Bank of England (BoE), are also anticipating rate hikes, reflecting a broader trend across global monetary policies.

The recent UN General Assembly and stronger-than-expected US Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) report have contributed to these shifts. Initially, falling oil prices raised hopes for easing inflation, leading to a dovish repricing in the market. However, comments from former President Donald Trump regarding negotiations with Iran reversed some of these expectations, causing oil prices to rise again and prompting a hawkish repricing of interest rates.

Looking ahead, developments in US-Iran relations will be crucial. Reports indicate that Iran has proposed a phased deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, contingent on US compliance with its terms. This situation remains fluid, with Iran's Foreign Minister waiting for a US response over the weekend. A successful negotiation could lead to lower oil prices, while continued tensions may support higher prices, impacting inflation and interest rate decisions globally.
