Meta’s AI Game Tools Trigger Selloff in Unity (U), Roblox (RBLX), and Take-Two (TTWO) Stock
Key Takeaways
- Meta unveiled Horizon Create and Horizon Studio during its Connect conference, AI-powered platforms enabling users to generate 2D and 3D mobile games through text descriptions
- Gaming stocks experienced declines on Thursday, with Unity Software, Take-Two Interactive, and Roblox all seeing share price drops
- Unity Software suffered the steepest decline at approximately 6%, Take-Two fell 1.6%, and Roblox dipped 0.3%
- Industry analysts suggest the market’s response may be excessive given the unproven nature of Horizon’s technology
- The situation echoes January’s market reaction when Alphabet unveiled Project Genie, triggering similar investor anxiety
Videogame stocks experienced a downturn Thursday following Meta Platforms’ unveiling of innovative AI-powered game development tools at its Connect conference’s second day.
The social media giant introduced Horizon Create and Horizon Studio, a pair of platforms enabling users to generate playable games by simply describing their vision in natural language.
Horizon Create targets mobile device users, while Horizon Studio caters to desktop browser environments. Meta has opened a waitlist for early adopters interested in testing the platforms upon launch.
Market Response to Meta’s Announcement
Take-Two Interactive’s stock price declined 1.6% to close at $202.98. Unity Software experienced the most significant impact, tumbling approximately 6% to roughly $41.42. Roblox saw a modest decrease of 0.3%, settling at $48.83.
Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., TTWO
AppLovin’s shares also retreated by roughly 1% in response to the announcement. These four companies all operate in segments of the game development or publishing ecosystem potentially vulnerable to Meta’s emerging technology.
Freedom Capital Markets videogaming analyst Nick McKay suggested investors fear AI democratization of game development could erode competitive moats enjoyed by incumbent industry players.
When contacted by Barron’s, Take-Two declined to provide commentary. Both Unity and Roblox similarly remained silent, not responding to inquiries.
Gaming Sector’s Previous AI-Related Volatility
Thursday’s market movement represents the second time a major technology company’s AI announcement has unsettled gaming sector investors. On January 30, identical stocks tumbled following Alphabet’s introduction of Project Genie, an AI system capable of generating fully-realized 3D environments.
Take-Two President Karl Slatoff disputed the parallels at that time, clarifying that Genie functioned differently from traditional game engines and shouldn’t be viewed as equivalent development infrastructure.
McKay emphasized that Meta’s product demonstrations occurred in carefully managed environments. Independent verification of the tools’ capabilities remains impossible until broader access becomes available.
He suggested considerable time would likely pass before platforms like Horizon could genuinely threaten major studios such as Take-Two. The publisher’s portfolio includes blockbuster franchises like Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November release following extensive development cycles.
Major game publishers employ substantial teams dedicated to narrative design, environmental construction, and gameplay systems. McKay argued these complex creative elements resist simple automation through AI platforms.
Unity, whose software infrastructure powers game development across the industry, potentially faces greater exposure than publishers like Take-Two. Nevertheless, McKay assessed even this vulnerability as currently minimal.
He observed Unity’s stock recovery following January’s Project Genie-related decline. While acknowledging short-term market overreactions as typical, he declined to project long-term implications with certainty.
Meta indicated games produced through Horizon Create and Horizon Studio will be distributed across Facebook, Instagram, and Horizon ecosystems. Visibility algorithms will prioritize titles demonstrating strong player engagement metrics.
The company intends to monetize the platform through in-game purchase systems and a Creator Fund. All user-generated content will undergo Meta’s safety review protocols and receive automated age-appropriateness classifications before public availability.
Meta confirmed early access deployment will proceed in phases, with broader public availability targeted for the coming months.
