Semiconductor Stocks Surge: AMD, Intel, and Marvell (MRVL) Rally on Friday
Key Highlights
- Akamai Technologies shares surged 21% following the announcement of an $11.6 billion cloud infrastructure partnership with Anthropic spanning seven years.
- The partnership with Anthropic has expansion potential reaching $20 billion and features stock warrants representing approximately 5% of Akamai’s equity.
- Semiconductor stocks including Advanced Micro Devices, Intel, and Marvell Technology posted gains in early Friday trading.
- Energy sector stocks including Chevron declined over 1% amid oil prices sliding beneath the $100 per barrel threshold.
- People Inc. shares climbed more than 8% following reports of potential acquisition interest from MGM Resorts.
Equity futures showed upward momentum during early Friday trading hours. Treasury yields retreated from their highest levels in nearly two decades, while crude oil prices dipped under the $100 benchmark.
The technology sector paced premarket gains. Meanwhile, energy sector equities ranked among the session’s weakest performers.
Akamai Technologies emerged as the session’s standout performer. The stock rallied 21% following disclosure of a significant cloud computing partnership.
Akamai Technologies, Inc., AKAM
Details of the Akamai-Anthropic Partnership
Under the agreement, Akamai will deliver cloud infrastructure services and software solutions to Anthropic throughout a seven-year period. The contract carries an $11.6 billion valuation.
The partnership contains provisions for an additional $9 billion expansion should Anthropic require enhanced computational capacity. This potential extension would elevate the total contract value to approximately $20 billion.
Within the deal framework, Akamai issued warrants to Anthropic representing roughly 5% of its outstanding common shares. About 2% of these warrants are anticipated to vest immediately.
The balance of 3% vests contingent upon Anthropic committing an additional $9 billion in cloud services throughout the seven-year contract period. The partnership aims to accommodate expanding computational demands.
Semiconductor and Energy Sector Movements
Additional semiconductor and artificial intelligence-focused equities posted Friday morning advances. Advanced Micro Devices appreciated approximately 2.5%.
The semiconductor manufacturer has rallied over 12% during the week. The company achieved a $1 trillion market capitalization milestone for the first time in its history.
Intel advanced nearly 2%. Marvell Technology climbed more than 2%, while Nvidia registered a modest gain below 1%.
Energy sector stocks trended downward. Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil, and Chevron each declined more than 1%.
The selloff occurred as Brent crude oil futures decreased 1.6% to $98.55 per barrel. Market participants also monitored discussions regarding potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In other market activity, Barry Diller’s People Inc. advanced more than 8%. The gain followed a Wall Street Journal article indicating MGM Resorts is exploring a potential acquisition of the company.
People had previously retracted its own acquisition proposal for MGM earlier this week. A reversed transaction would significantly alter that dynamic.
Additional Market Movers
Select Water Solutions appreciated roughly 6% after announcing its acquisition of privately-held Pilot Water Solutions. The transaction is valued at $700 million combining cash and equity.
Fathom Holdings and Neighborhood Intelligence both posted gains following their agreement to consider an alternative transaction structure. This would supersede their previous merger agreement and incorporate digital assets connected to tZERO Group.
Not all equities posted Friday gains. Scholastic shares tumbled 12% after the publisher disclosed quarterly losses exceeding analyst expectations.
Scholastic posted a 4% year-over-year revenue contraction. Notwithstanding the decline, management maintained its full-year financial guidance.
Zscaler shares retreated 4% following the cybersecurity firm’s announcement of a Chief Revenue Officer transition. Ross Tackett will assume the position effective October 1, 2026.
Market participants remained attentive to Treasury yields and crude oil pricing as trading commenced. Both metrics had moderated from recent peaks entering Friday’s trading session.
