Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Stock: Can It Reach $750 After Breaking $1 Trillion?

      Key Takeaways

      • Advanced Micro Devices shares surged over 2% Friday morning, reaching a fresh 52-week peak around $642.
      • The semiconductor giant recently achieved a $1 trillion market capitalization, becoming the fourth U.S. chip company alongside Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron to reach this milestone.
      • Technical analyst Tony Zhang from OptionsPlay projects AMD could surge to $750 by November following its escape from a prolonged consolidation pattern.
      • Wall Street consensus price target stands at $604, while the stock trades with a price-to-earnings ratio exceeding 160.
      • Company executives have liquidated more than $105 million in shares during the last quarter, though institutional ownership remains strong at 71%.

AMD stock advanced more than 2% during Friday’s early trading session, participating in a widespread technology sector rally. Futures for the Nasdaq climbed 0.55% while the S&P 500 futures posted gains of 0.33% before market opening.

Shares changed hands near the $642 level, marking a fresh 52-week peak. This represents a notable increase from Thursday’s closing price of $629.26.

The semiconductor manufacturer has experienced remarkable momentum in recent sessions. The company recently surpassed the $1 trillion market capitalization threshold, joining an elite group as the fourth American chipmaker to achieve this distinction, following Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron.

For several months, shares oscillated within a $450 to $550 trading channel. The breakout occurred following industry reports indicating approximately 10% price increases spanning AI processors, graphics processing units, and chipset products.

      Wall Street Maintains Optimistic Outlook

During a CNBC interview this week, Tony Zhang from OptionsPlay indicated that AMD possesses further upside potential. He highlighted robust demand for the company’s central processing unit and graphics processing unit server offerings as the catalyst driving recent pricing power.

Zhang established a potential price objective of $750 by November. Considering the stock’s substantial appreciation, he recommended employing options strategies such as call spreads to mitigate downside exposure instead of purchasing shares directly.

The consensus price target among Wall Street analysts currently registers at $604, trailing the stock’s current trading level. Piper Sandler initiated coverage with a $600 price objective on September 10. Raymond James elevated its target to $641 in late August, while BMO Capital established a $550 projection during the same timeframe.

The equity maintains a “Moderate Buy” rating consensus, comprising three Strong Buy recommendations, 33 Buy ratings, ten Hold assessments, and one Sell rating.

      Chart Analysis Indicates Elevated Momentum

Advanced Micro Devices trades significantly above both short-term and long-term moving average indicators. The stock positions approximately 23% above its 20-day moving average and 77% beyond its 200-day moving average.

While this demonstrates bullish momentum structure, the relative strength index measures 72.64. Technical analysts generally consider readings above 70 as overbought conditions, potentially introducing increased volatility.

Critical resistance emerges near the $643 level, while the previous 52-week high of $630.80 now functions as potential support.

Examining fundamentals, Advanced Micro Devices reported second-quarter revenue totaling $11.54 billion, representing 50% year-over-year expansion, alongside earnings per share of $1.66 that exceeded analyst projections. The company’s price-to-earnings multiple approximates 161, substantially elevated compared to broader market valuations.

Portions of the bullish thesis connect to artificial intelligence opportunities. Chief Executive Lisa Su has posited that “agentic AI” could trigger renewed central processing unit demand cycles, while investors progressively regard AMD as a viable alternative to Nvidia for data center acceleration applications.

However, not all market participants remain convinced the momentum is sustainable. Ascending Treasury yields combined with AMD’s extended valuation metrics have prompted certain analysts to caution about profit-taking risks.

Insider transaction activity warrants attention. Executive Vice President Forrest Norrod divested 17,261 shares on September 15 at an average execution price of $503.05. Executive Vice President Mark Papermaster liquidated 28,811 shares on August 20 at $471.87 per share.

Collectively, company insiders have sold $105.5 million in equity value throughout the past 90 days. Institutional investors maintain ownership of 71.34% of outstanding shares, with BlackRock commanding the largest position at over 150 million shares.
