Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Stock Surges 200% Annually: Wall Street’s Outlook for 2025
Key Takeaways
- Advanced Micro Devices delivered Q2 revenue of $11.54 billion, representing a 50% year-over-year increase, with non-GAAP EPS reaching $1.66, surpassing analyst projections
- The company’s Q3 revenue forecast of $12.7 billion to $13.3 billion exceeded Wall Street’s consensus expectations
- Virginia Retirement Systems established a fresh $165 million position in AMD, making it the fund’s 13th-largest investment
- Analyst consensus assigns AMD a Strong Buy designation with a mean price target near $647, suggesting potential gains exceeding 40%
- The semiconductor giant currently trades at approximately 123 times earnings, while company insiders have divested roughly $109.5 million in shares during the last quarter
Shares of AMD began trading Tuesday at $477.57, climbing 4.69% for the week, as market participants responded positively to impressive quarterly performance and optimistic analyst outlooks entering autumn.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., AMD
The second-quarter financial performance left little room for criticism. The company posted $11.54 billion in revenue, marking a 50% jump from the year-ago period, while non-GAAP earnings per share reached $1.66, exceeding the $1.62 consensus forecast. The data center segment swung to operating profitability with $2.1 billion in income.
Executive leadership projected third-quarter revenue spanning $12.7 billion to $13.3 billion, surpassing analyst expectations. Strong customer demand for MI accelerators and Helios rack-scale solutions underpins this confident outlook.
Virginia Retirement Systems revealed a newly established $165.15 million stake in AMD throughout Q2, acquiring 284,286 shares. This investment represents the pension fund’s 13th-largest position, comprising 1% of total assets. Institutional ownership of the chipmaker now stands at 71.34%.
Analyst optimism continued building momentum. Argus elevated its price objective from $450 to $625 while maintaining a Buy recommendation. KeyCorp established a $650 target. Citigroup upgraded AMD from Market Perform to Buy during July. The mean price objective currently rests at $553.72, while the broader Street consensus Strong Buy rating indicates an average target approaching $647.
Targeting Intel’s Data Center Dominance
In the CPU arena, AMD is aggressively pursuing Intel’s market share with its 5th Generation EPYC processors and forthcoming 6th Generation Venice architecture. The value proposition is compelling: enterprises can reduce Intel Xeon server deployments by as much as 86%, decrease power usage by 69%, and lower three-year ownership costs by 41%.
J.P. Morgan analyst Harlan Sur forecasts AMD’s server CPU revenue could expand beyond 70% year-over-year in 2027, with data center revenue potentially doubling or more. Despite maintaining a Neutral stance, his $550 price objective implies approximately 20% appreciation from present trading levels.
AMD additionally announced plans for an AI workstation exceeding $100,000, scheduled for 2027 release, broadening its strategy beyond traditional data center semiconductors into premium AI computing platforms.
Profitability Headwinds and Valuation Debates
Challenges remain on the horizon. AMD’s adoption of high-capacity HBM4 memory technology may necessitate rack pricing increases of approximately 9% to 10% by 2027 to maintain profit margins. Sur highlighted that escalating MI450 production volumes could create gross margin compression through 2027.
The valuation multiple presents another consideration. Following a surge exceeding 200% over twelve months, AMD currently commands roughly 123 times earnings, representing a premium valuation compared to both Nvidia and Broadcom using this measurement.
Executive stock sales have accelerated. CEO Lisa Su divested 125,000 shares at $460.69 during June, while EVP Mark Papermaster sold 28,811 units at $471.87 in August. Aggregate insider dispositions throughout the past ninety days totaled approximately $109.5 million.
Notwithstanding the insider selling activity, one analytical projection anticipates data center revenue will comprise over 70% of AMD’s total revenue by 2027, driven by growth rates in this segment outpacing all other business units.
Wall Street analysts project AMD will generate $6.44 in earnings per share for the current fiscal year.
