Reserve Bank of Australia Expected to Raise Interest Rates to 4.60%

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is anticipated to increase its cash rate by 25 basis points during its upcoming meeting, raising the rate from 4.35% to 4.60%. This adjustment would mark the highest cash rate in nearly 15 years. Major Australian banks have largely priced in this rate hike, suggesting that market focus will shift to the RBA's guidance on future monetary policy following the decision.

Recent economic indicators have strengthened the case for the rate hike. Headline inflation in Australia eased to 3.5% in July, but trimmed mean inflation remains elevated at 3.6%. RBA Governor Michele Bullock has highlighted rising inflation risks, citing persistent excess demand and high oil prices influenced by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East as contributing factors. However, the unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 4.6% in August, indicating potential softening in the labor market despite an increase in employment numbers.

The RBA's decision and accompanying guidance will be closely monitored, particularly any changes to its commitment to manage inflation. If the RBA signals that further rate hikes may be necessary, markets could anticipate an increase to 4.85% by the end of the year. Conversely, any indication of a more cautious approach could lead to a decline in the Australian dollar. Additionally, the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on Wednesday, shortly after the RBA meeting, may provide further insights into the central bank's future actions.
