People's Bank of China Expected to Set USD/CNY Reference Rate at 6.7025

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is anticipated to set the daily USD/CNY reference rate at 6.7025 on October 1, 2026, as part of its managed floating exchange rate system. This rate is closely monitored by traders and analysts as it reflects the central bank's stance on the yuan's value against the US dollar. The PBOC's fixing mechanism has recently shifted, indicating a potential easing of its previous resistance to the yuan's appreciation.

For much of the past year, the PBOC had set its daily guidance weaker than market expectations, which traders interpreted as an effort to slow the yuan's rise. However, in September, the midpoint strengthened for eight consecutive sessions, marking the longest streak since 2023. This change suggests that the central bank may be more comfortable with a gradual appreciation of the yuan, as it reached its strongest level since February 2023.

The daily fixing is influenced by various factors, including the previous day's closing price, movements in major currencies, and domestic economic conditions. While the yuan is allowed to trade within a band of plus or minus 2% around the daily midpoint, the PBOC retains the discretion to intervene if market pressures push the currency toward either edge of the band. Analysts from Goldman Sachs have noted that the recent firmer fixings may be strategically timed ahead of diplomatic engagements, such as the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
