U.S. Pension Funds Expected to Sell $33 Billion in Stocks

Goldman Sachs has projected that U.S. pension funds will sell approximately $33 billion in equities by the end of September 2026. This anticipated selling activity ranks in the 98th percentile of similar flows since the year 2000, indicating a significant movement in the market.

In contrast, systematic Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) are expected to engage in buying activities, potentially purchasing $11.5 billion globally in flat market conditions. If stock prices increase, this figure could rise to nearly $30 billion. However, should the markets decline, CTAs may reverse their strategy, leading to an additional $15.8 billion in selling.

This dynamic between pension fund selling and CTAs' buying or selling strategies highlights the complexities of market behavior as investors respond to changing economic conditions.
