U.S. Stocks Close Mixed as Semiconductor Shares Rally

U.S. stocks ended with mixed results on September 28, 2026, as gains in semiconductor and select technology shares contrasted with modest declines across major indices. The Nasdaq 100 rose by 0.21%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell by 0.09%. The S&P 500 decreased by 0.17%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 132 points, closing at 51,355.13. The Russell 2000 index was the weakest performer, losing 0.35%.

Among the notable gainers were semiconductor equipment manufacturers and chip designers. Applied Materials surged by 5.19% to $512.01, Marvell Technology increased by 4.51% to $263.27, and KLA rose by 3.89% to $196.53. Other significant advances included Arm Holdings, which gained 3.65%, and ASML, which rose by 3.56%. Meta Platforms also saw a notable increase of 3.26%, closing at $738.96.

Despite the strength in certain technology stocks, the overall performance of the Nasdaq Composite indicated a lack of broad market momentum. The S&P 500 closed in a neutral zone, while the Nasdaq index also remained in a neutral swing area. This divergence highlights the importance of analyzing individual stock performance alongside broader index trends, as strong gains in select stocks can be offset by weaknesses in others.
