      • The analyst report questions the optimistic AI narrative surrounding Meta’s Muse platform.

HSBC analyst Sameer Lam downgraded the company to Reduce from Hold while maintaining his $211 price objective, suggesting meaningful downside potential from current trading levels.

The downgrade directly confronts one of this year’s most popular artificial intelligence investment themes. Twilio shares rocketed approximately 30% higher following Meta Platforms’ September 8, 2026 debut of its Muse AI agent.

Market participants anticipated that Muse would generate substantial increases in messaging volume, voice calls, and verification requests flowing through Twilio’s infrastructure. HSBC contends that this enthusiasm has significantly exceeded reality.

      HSBC’s Concerns Explained

Lam’s thesis focuses on which components of a Muse transaction generate the highest margins. His analysis suggests Meta’s proprietary AI voice technology retains the most lucrative aspects of these interactions internally.

This structure relegates Twilio to primarily handling commoditized services. The company would process basic telephone number routing and standard verification messages rather than high-value AI-powered communications.

Lam further emphasized that this connectivity segment faces intense competition. Companies like Bandwidth and Sinch provide comparable services, and Meta maintains flexibility to distribute traffic across multiple vendors or directly through wholesale telecommunications providers.

“We view the rising AI-agent traffic will benefit the industry, but it does not guarantee Twilio captures disproportionate economics,” Lam wrote in his note to clients.

      Wall Street Divided on Outlook

HSBC’s bearish stance contrasts sharply with other major investment banks. Morgan Stanley previously highlighted Twilio as among the top beneficiaries of anticipated Muse-related communications volume increases.

Stifel maintains its optimistic position as well, reaffirming its Buy recommendation. The firm views consumer-facing AI agents as a significant long-term catalyst for Twilio’s business, though acknowledging minimal near-term impact on third-quarter financial results.

Investors now face divergent interpretations of identical market dynamics. The bullish case positions Twilio as a primary beneficiary of the AI agent revolution. The bearish perspective argues the company receives unwarranted credit for revenue growth that may never materialize.

Friday’s broader equity market performance wasn’t driving Twilio’s weakness. The S&P 500 advanced 0.3%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.6%, indicating Twilio’s decline reflected company-specific concerns rather than systematic market pressure.

The stock has traded between $98.44 and $304.75 over the past 52 weeks. Friday’s session briefly touched that upper boundary before the downgrade emerged, demonstrating how dramatically AI-related optimism has propelled the shares during the past year.

Twilio is scheduled to release its next quarterly earnings on October 29, 2026. That report will provide investors with concrete evidence regarding whether Muse is generating measurable demand increases, or if HSBC’s skepticism proves justified.
