US Consumer Sentiment Improves Slightly in September

The University of Michigan's final consumer sentiment index for September registered at 48.1, surpassing the expected figure of 47.6. This marks a slight increase from the preliminary reading of 47.8, although it remains significantly lower than the previous month's index of 51.7.

The current conditions component held steady at 50.9, matching the preliminary estimate but down from 51.9 in August. Meanwhile, the expectations index rose to 46.3, slightly above the preliminary figure of 45.8, but down from 51.5 in the prior month.

Inflation expectations remained elevated, with one-year expectations at 4.6%, consistent with preliminary data and up from 4.0% previously. Five-year inflation expectations also held steady at 3.4%. These inflation figures are particularly relevant given their correlation with rising gasoline prices, which continue to impact consumer sentiment. In financial markets, US 10-year Treasury yields increased by 4.2 basis points to reach 5.20%, reflecting investor reactions to the sentiment data.
