Australia's August Consumer Price Index Matches Expectations at 4%

Australia's Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August 2026 has been reported at 4%, aligning with market expectations and reflecting a significant increase from the previous month's rate of 3.5%. This rise is attributed to surging fuel prices, which have impacted overall inflation levels in the country.

On a month-over-month basis, the CPI increased by 0.4%, consistent with forecasts and a decrease from the prior month's rise of 1.0%. The Trimmed Mean CPI, which excludes volatile items, also remained stable at 3.6% year-over-year, matching expectations and the previous month's figure. Month-over-month, the Trimmed Mean CPI rose by 0.2%, slightly below the anticipated 0.3% and down from 0.5% in July.

These inflation figures come on the heels of recent monetary policy adjustments by the Reserve Bank of Australia, which raised interest rates in response to rising inflationary pressures. The data will likely inform future policy decisions as the central bank navigates economic conditions in the coming months.
