UAE to build first satellites for France’s AI space project

UAE company Marlan Space and US company Loft Orbital are leading a consortium in a $1 billion investment in France to build Altair-Next Gen, the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) satellite infrastructure.

The first 50 satellites will be manufactured in the UAE.

Orbitworks, a commercial low Earth orbit satellite developer, will produce the satellites at its facility in Kezad, Abu Dhabi, the state-run Wam news agency reported.

Orbitworks was formed in 2024 as a joint venture between Marlan Space, the space investment unit of Abu Dhabi’s International Holding Company (IHC), and space-infrastructure company Loft Orbital.

The initial phase will comprise 50 satellites carrying radar, optical and other sensors, serving the French, European and UAE governments, as well as global commercial and sovereign customers.

The plan was announced and signed at the International Space Summit in Paris by Marlan Space and Loft Orbital, in the presence of Emmanuel Macron

Loft Orbital, which operates more than 100 payloads and 20 AI missions in orbit, will provide technological innovations, products and operational experience.

The first applications for the Altair-Next Gen network will be in the maritime industry, wildfire detection and disaster response, and the security of ports and critical infrastructure. Altair-Next Gen satellites analyse what they observe while still in orbit and transmit the event, not the raw imagery.

This week IHC signed an agreement to acquire an 80 percent stake in Marlan Space.

The Abu Dhabi company is part of a business conglomerate led by its chair, Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser and brother of President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

IHC shares closed 0.2 percent higher at AED389 on Wednesday and are down almost 8 percent so far this year.
