UAE to test cross-border cargo drone

An autonomous aviation company plans to conduct a cross-border cargo test flight from the UAE to a neighbouring country next year.

Abu Dhabi-based LODD Autonomous will conduct the flight as part of pilot testing for its “Hili” hybrid electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, CEO Rashid Matar Al Manai told the UAE state-run Wam news agency.

The neighbouring country was not named.

The company is continuing flight tests in Al Ain and preparing to submit its final certification application to the authorities, Al Manai said.

The UAE has been leading the GCC in launching autonomous eVTOL aircraft.

The country’s civil aviation regulator approved eVTOL operations from a purpose-built commercial vertiport in Dubai in July.

Joby Aviation, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, plans to launch an air taxi service in Dubai this year.

In November, Abu Dhabi confirmed Zayed International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport as the first two of 10 planned vertiport locations across the emirate.

Al Manai said the company has received more than 330 orders for the Hili aircraft, unveiled in September 2025, from local and international companies. Overseas orders account for more than 70 percent of the total.

Founded in Abu Dhabi in 2023, LODD Autonomous develops next-generation autonomous systems for middle-mile cargo logistics.

Its flagship Hili is designed to carry payloads of up to 250kg over distances of about 700km.
