UiPath (PATH) Stock Plunges 16% Post-Earnings: Time to Buy the Dip?
Key Takeaways
- PATH shares opened at $16.24 following a previous close of $18.22, declining further to approximately $15.66 in post-earnings trading
- Second-quarter revenue reached $410.3 million, representing a 13.3% year-over-year increase and surpassing the $397.8 million consensus forecast
- Billings underperformed expectations at $375.5 million, with investors concerned about growth rates lagging AI software competitors
- The company elevated its fiscal 2027 revenue projection to $1.789-$1.794 billion
- Wall Street maintains a predominantly “Hold” stance with a $15.73 average price target; CEO Daniel Dines recently divested more than $22 million in shares
Shares of UiPath (PATH) plummeted more than 16% on September 4 following the release of second-quarter fiscal 2027 results that, while exceeding revenue projections, fell short of meeting elevated investor expectations for AI-focused technology companies.
The automation software provider’s stock commenced trading at $16.24, marking a steep decline from its previous closing price of $18.22, before sliding to approximately $15.12. This positioned PATH roughly 21.6% beneath its 52-week peak of $19.29, achieved in December 2025.
Quarterly revenue totaled $410.3 million, reflecting a 13.3% year-over-year expansion and exceeding analyst projections of $397.8 million. Non-GAAP earnings per share registered at $0.15, aligning with Street expectations.
The company’s billings figure, however, disappointed at $375.5 million, missing forecasts marginally. Leadership attributed this shortfall to extended sales cycles as corporate clients deliberate between conventional automation solutions and emerging AI-powered alternatives.
Chief Executive Daniel Dines emphasized that 18 of the company’s 20 largest transactions during the quarter incorporated AI components, positioning UiPath as capitalizing on enterprise artificial intelligence deployment rather than being displaced by it. Despite this narrative, market participants remained unconvinced.
Expansion Rate Underwhelms in AI-Driven Market
Annual recurring revenue expanded 12% to reach $1.938 billion, while the organization delivered its fourth consecutive quarter of GAAP profitability. Management also upgraded full-year revenue guidance to a range of $1.789-$1.794 billion and projected approximately $445 million in non-GAAP operating income.
Third-quarter guidance calling for $440 million to $445 million marginally exceeded analyst estimates, yet fell short of investor aspirations following the stock’s approximate 9% appreciation just eight days prior to the earnings announcement.
The fundamental issue centers on perception: 12-13% growth appears underwhelming when compared to rapidly expanding AI software companies, while uncertainty persists regarding whether artificial intelligence might eventually diminish demand for conventional automation platforms.
Newly appointed CFO Hitesh Ramani addressed these concerns, indicating the company is adopting a “prudent approach” to financial forecasting amid macroeconomic uncertainty and evolving customer adoption behaviors.
Wall Street Maintains Cautious Outlook
Analyst responses proved restrained. BMO Capital Markets elevated its price objective from $13 to $18 while maintaining a Market Perform rating. Wells Fargo adjusted its target upward from $13 to $15 with an Equal Weight designation. Royal Bank of Canada revised its forecast from $15 to $17 at Sector Perform. DA Davidson increased its target from $12 to $16 at Neutral, and TD Cowen moved from $13 to $16 at Hold.
Among 19 analysts tracking the stock, 16 assign Hold ratings, two recommend Buy, and one suggests Sell. The consensus price target stands at $15.73.
Contributing to the cautious sentiment, CEO Daniel Dines divested 1.4 million shares on August 19 at an average price of $16.07, generating proceeds exceeding $22.5 million. His remaining stake comprises over 26 million shares.
Institutional stakeholders including State Street, Morgan Stanley, and AQR Capital have expanded their holdings in recent reporting periods. Institutional ownership currently represents 62.5% of outstanding shares.
PATH has declined 4.8% year to date, and a $1,000 investment made five years ago would currently be valued at approximately $242.
