UK Retail Sales Growth Slows as Summer Boost Fades

Retail sales growth in the United Kingdom has slowed to a four-month low in August, according to data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Total sales increased by 0.7% year-on-year, a decline from 1.3% in July. Like-for-like sales, which account for changes in retail space, also fell to 0.5% from 1.0% in the previous month. The BRC noted that while summer spending had started early this year due to higher temperatures in May, the momentum could not be sustained into August for most categories, particularly non-food items.

Food sales growth decreased to 2.6% from 3.8% in July, while non-food sales fell by 0.8%, extending a 0.7% decline from the previous month. Consumers shifted their spending away from big-ticket items such as furniture and household appliances towards more affordable health and beauty products. Additionally, separate data from Barclays indicated that overall consumer spending rose by 2.1% year-on-year in August, slightly up from 2.0% in July, but consumer confidence dropped to 26%, down from a 21-month high of 30% in the previous month.

In response to rising youth unemployment, the BRC and the UK Department for Work and Pensions announced a plan to create 100,000 jobs for young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET) by the next general election in 2029. Currently, nearly 1 million individuals aged 16 to 24 are classified as NEET, a figure that recently reached its highest level since 2013. The initiative includes a new voluntary work placement program offering two to four-week placements for 18 to 24-year-olds receiving unemployment benefits, with an initial availability of around 11,000 positions. Retailers and their suppliers represent nearly a quarter of youth employment in the UK, and rising minimum wage and social security contributions have been cited as factors contributing to the increase in youth unemployment.
