Ukraine Launches Largest Drone Attack on Moscow Oil Refinery

Ukraine has executed its largest drone attack on the Moscow region, targeting the city's main oil refinery and a residential building. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that 450 drones were intercepted, marking this as the most extensive assault of its kind on the area. The attack resulted in at least two fatalities and 20 injuries, according to the region's governor.

The Moscow Oil Refinery, located in the Kapotnya district, has a processing capacity of approximately 11 million tonnes of crude oil annually, equating to around 220,000 barrels per day. This facility is crucial for Moscow's fuel supply, accounting for about 40% of the city's fuel market and 70% of the region's demand for petrol and aviation gas. Reports indicate significant fires at both the refinery and the Sofyino logistics technopark following the drone strikes on September 19 and 20.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strikes, emphasizing that the targeted facilities are vital assets worth billions of dollars that support Russia's military efforts. The immediate concern for markets revolves around the duration of the refinery's outage, as any prolonged disruption could impact diesel prices, which have already been on the rise. Traders are closely monitoring the situation to assess the potential effects on both domestic fuel supply and Russian export flows.
