US Military Reports Surge in Oil and LNG Shipments Through Strait of Hormuz
Shipments of oil and liquefied natural gas through the Strait of Hormuz have reached their highest level in six months, according to Admiral Brad Cooper, head of the US Central Command. In a video message on September 19, Cooper attributed this increase to successful US naval protection and mine clearance efforts, stating that over one billion barrels of crude have been transported through the strait in recent months. This development comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, with Iran claiming that it has closed the strait and regional negotiations on shipping routes remaining stalled.
On the same day, Saudi authorities issued air raid alerts in Riyadh, marking the first such warnings since the peak of hostilities in the US-Iran conflict earlier this year. Reports indicated that an air strike targeted jet fuel facilities at King Khalid International Airport, with visible smoke observed at the site. These incidents underscore the persistent security concerns surrounding Saudi energy infrastructure, especially following drone attacks that have disrupted a pipeline designed to bypass the strait.
The political context is significant, as the Trump administration faces rising petrol and diesel prices ahead of midterm elections. Energy Secretary Chris Wright noted that markets depend on approximately 10 million barrels per day passing through the strait, describing the current oil market as tight but not excessively so. Traders are expected to monitor the sustainability of the increased shipping volumes, potential further attacks on Saudi energy assets, and the resumption of talks regarding shipping routes.
