Minneapolis Fed President Kashkari Highlights Broad Inflation Concerns in the US Economy

Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari stated that inflation remains excessively high across various sectors of the US economy, extending beyond just oil prices. In a recent interview, he emphasized that even when excluding volatile categories like energy and food, price pressures are evident in services and broader consumption. Kashkari supported the Federal Reserve's recent decision to raise the federal funds target range by a quarter percentage point to 3.75%-4.00%, aligning with the views of most Fed policymakers who anticipate at least one more rate hike before the end of the year.

Kashkari pointed out that the Fed's ability to influence oil prices is limited, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that the recent surge in crude oil prices, driven by conflicts in the Middle East, underscores the complexity of the inflation issue. Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism about the resilience of the US economy, citing strong growth and signs of improved productivity, while hoping for a transition to disinflation as conflicts subside.

Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh echoed Kashkari's sentiments, estimating inflation at around 3.6% in August, with many categories continuing to rise above 3% over both six-month and 12-month periods. Kashkari reiterated the Fed's commitment to its 2% inflation target and called for collaborative efforts from other government sectors to address the broader inflationary pressures affecting American consumers.
