Oil Prices Rise Amid Houthi Attacks on Riyadh

Oil prices opened higher on the Globex trading platform following a reported missile attack on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Houthi rebels from Yemen have escalated their conflict with Saudi Arabia, launching missiles towards the capital and claiming responsibility for attacks on sensitive sites, including an Aramco facility in the Red Sea city of Yanbu. Saudi air defenses intercepted a missile aimed at Riyadh early on Sunday, and residents reported explosions and smoke near King Khalid International Airport, which experienced significant flight disruptions. No casualties or damage have been confirmed, although earlier reports suggested potential strikes on airport facilities.

The recent developments have prompted traders to reassess the risk premium associated with Saudi oil supply. The proximity of the attacks to the capital raises concerns about the security of Saudi energy infrastructure and export routes. This comes amid a backdrop of ongoing tensions in the region, particularly following the Houthis' declaration of a naval blockade against Riyadh in July. The U.S. has indicated it will not participate in offensive strikes against the Houthis, which may affect the dynamics of the conflict.

As traders monitor the situation, the Asian market opening will be crucial in determining whether the upward trend in oil prices holds. The market's response may be influenced by the potential for further attacks on Saudi targets and the verification of claims regarding the Yanbu incident. The U.S. Central Command reported that oil and LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have reached a six-month high, suggesting that, for now, the immediate supply impact may be limited.
