US Consumer Price Index Remains Steady at 3.4% in August

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the United States for August 2026 remained unchanged at 3.4%, matching analysts' expectations. This figure follows a previous reading of 3.4%, indicating stability in inflation rates. On a month-over-month basis, the CPI increased by 0.4%, consistent with forecasts, and up from a slight rise of 0.1% in July.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, showed a year-over-year increase of 2.4%, aligning with expectations. However, the month-over-month core CPI rose by 0.3%, surpassing the anticipated 0.2% increase, while the prior month recorded a 0.2% rise. Key components contributing to these figures included a decrease in motor vehicle insurance and lodging costs, alongside increases in medical care and airfares.

Market analysts had predicted a 68% likelihood of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in September, with expectations of further hikes later in the year. The USD/JPY exchange rate was noted at 154.01 prior to the CPI report, reflecting market sentiment regarding potential monetary policy adjustments.
