US Core Inflation Rises Due to Supercore Services

Recent inflation data from the United States indicates an unexpected increase in core inflation, primarily driven by supercore services. While core goods prices were softer than anticipated, the services sector showed notable strength, particularly in lodging, which emerged as a significant contributor to the inflation rise.

In contrast, housing prices were reported to be softer, and medical services along with airfares exhibited relatively stable trends in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). However, components related to the Producer Price Index (PPI) had already shown higher-than-expected results, suggesting ongoing pressures in the services sector.

The current composition of inflation data highlights that underlying services inflation continues to pose a challenge for the Federal Reserve as it navigates monetary policy in response to these developments.
