US Dollar Strengthens Following Hawkish Fed Comments; USD/JPY Faces Key Resistance

The US dollar experienced a broad strengthening on Friday after Federal Reserve Chair Warsh delivered a hawkish address at the Jackson Hole Symposium. His remarks suggested that financial conditions are not as restrictive as previously thought, leading to a tightening of market conditions. This shift has influenced the probability of a rate hike at the upcoming September meeting, which now stands at 67%. Warsh emphasized the Fed's focus on inflation, indicating that only a weak US Consumer Price Index report could lower these probabilities significantly.

In contrast, the Japanese yen saw some strengthening, attributed to comments from Bank of Japan official Takata. However, market expectations for interest rates remained stable, suggesting that profit-taking may have contributed to the yen's movement ahead of a significant resistance level around 160.50 for the USD/JPY pair. Bank of Japan Governor Ueda's recent statements did not introduce new hawkish signals, leading traders to focus on future guidance regarding monetary policy adjustments.

Technical analysis indicates that the USD/JPY has reached a critical resistance zone, with sellers expected to emerge around the 160.50 mark. A break above this level could lead to bullish momentum towards 164.00, while a drop below the support level of 159.43 could signal a decline towards 155.00. Upcoming economic reports, including the US ADP report and the Non-Farm Payrolls, are anticipated to influence market dynamics in the coming days.
