S&P 500 Futures Rise Following Fed Rate Hike

Futures for the S&P 500 index are indicating a positive opening, currently up by 0.8%. This follows a sell-off in the stock market after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing the target range to 3.75% to 4.00%. The decision, which was unanimous among policymakers, also suggested that at least one more rate hike could occur before the end of the year, as projected by 16 of the 18 members of the Federal Open Market Committee.

Despite the initial market reaction, the S&P 500 found support at its 100-day moving average, which is approximately 7,510. This level coincides with the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level near 7,463, providing a technical area for buyers to engage. As trading resumes, the index faces the challenge of reclaiming the 7,600 mark, which previously acted as a support level before it was breached. A successful move above this threshold could signal a more convincing rebound and bring recent highs near 7,800 back into consideration.

Market sentiment is currently aided by a stabilization in long-term Treasury yields and a decline in oil prices, which alleviates some pressure on stock valuations. However, analysts caution that a sustained drop below the 100-day moving average could lead to further declines, potentially exposing the 7,300 level. The coming days will be crucial as traders assess the implications of the Fed's decision and the overall market dynamics.
