US Manufacturing Data and Fed Comments Influence Markets

The US manufacturing sector showed signs of slowing in September, with the ISM manufacturing index coming in at 54.5, slightly below the expected 55.0. In Canada, the S&P Global manufacturing PMI also fell to 51.5, down from 53.0 in the previous month. These figures contributed to a mixed sentiment in the markets as investors awaited the upcoming non-farm payrolls report.

In the bond market, the yield on the US 10-year Treasury note decreased by 5.4 basis points to 5.24%, while the price of gold rose by $20 to $4,176. The dollar strengthened against other currencies, particularly the Japanese yen, which saw a brief dip before recovering. The USD/JPY pair ended the day up 63 pips at 158.01, despite an unexpected drop earlier in the trading session.

Comments from Federal Reserve officials also influenced market dynamics. Fed Governor Christopher Waller indicated that rising long-term rates are beginning to impact housing and commercial lending, while fellow Fed member Philip Jefferson suggested that more data would be necessary before making further decisions on interest rate hikes. Currently, the odds of a rate increase at the Fed's meeting on October 28 have decreased to 26%, down from higher expectations earlier in the week.
