India and Mainland China Markets Closed, Hong Kong Emerges as Key Trading Venue

On Friday, October 2, both India and mainland China are closed for national holidays, leaving Hong Kong as the primary venue for regional emerging market trading. India's markets are shut in observance of Gandhi Jayanti, which commemorates the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, while mainland China's markets are closed for the week-long National Day holiday. Trading in India will resume on Monday, October 5, while mainland China will reopen on October 8.

The closure of these major markets is significant as it coincides with the release of the US jobs report, which is expected to influence the dollar and Treasury yields. With India and China being among the largest importers of crude oil, any fluctuations in oil prices over the weekend will only be reflected in their markets upon reopening. Traders are advised to anticipate potential catch-up movements in both markets when they resume trading next week.

Hong Kong's reopening follows its own holiday, but the Stock Connect program, which facilitates trading between Hong Kong and mainland China, remains suspended in both directions until October 8. This suspension may lead to thinner liquidity for China-focused and dual-listed shares in Hong Kong, as trading will occur without cross-border flows. Additionally, India's market closures will continue in the coming weeks, with several holidays scheduled, including Dussehra and Diwali, which may further impact trading activity.
