US Threatens Diesel Export Ban to Pressure Europe for Fuel Reserves Release

The United States has warned Germany and France to release emergency diesel inventories or face a potential ban on diesel exports, as Washington seeks to lower soaring diesel prices ahead of the midterm elections in November. The US has requested that the European Union release approximately 120 million barrels of diesel over the next six months to alleviate global fuel prices, which have been impacted by various geopolitical tensions.

The diesel market is currently under strain due to multiple factors, including Russia's ban on diesel exports, China's halt on fuel exports, and disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. A US export ban would significantly affect Europe, which relies heavily on US fuel, potentially leading to increased diesel prices in the region. In contrast, a coordinated release of reserves by the EU could provide temporary relief but would leave Europe with reduced stockpiles heading into winter.

The EU's energy taskforce is scheduled to meet to discuss the situation, while US officials express frustration with European nations for not fully adhering to previous commitments regarding emergency stock releases. The outcome of these discussions will be crucial in determining the diesel supply outlook for Europe as it prepares for the colder months.
