Hong Kong Stock Market Reopens as Mainland China Markets Remain Closed Until October 8

Hong Kong's stock market will reopen on Friday, October 2, following a closure for National Day on Thursday. In contrast, mainland China's stock exchanges, including the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets, will remain closed for the entire week-long holiday, with trading set to resume on Thursday, October 8.

During the reopening, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange will operate during its regular hours from 09:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00 local time. However, trading will occur without the Stock Connect program, which links mainland and Hong Kong markets, as it will be suspended until both markets are operational again on October 8. This suspension may lead to reduced liquidity for China-focused and dual-listed shares in Hong Kong, as they will trade without mainland participation.

The Shanghai Composite Index closed at approximately 3,840, up about 0.3%, on the last trading day before the holiday. Additionally, futures and gold markets in Shanghai are also closed and will reopen on October 8, with night trading resuming later that evening. As mainland markets remain shut, the offshore yuan will experience less depth in price discovery, and any news during the holiday will likely influence prices offshore first, potentially leading to adjustments when trading resumes in mainland China.
