Tokyo Core Inflation Expected to Rise to 2.4%, Impacting Bank of Japan Policy

Consumer inflation data for Tokyo is anticipated to show a significant increase in core prices for September, with forecasts predicting a rise to 2.4% year-on-year, up from 1.8% in August. This data, set to be released at 2330 GMT on Thursday, is viewed as a leading indicator for national inflation trends in Japan, which will be reported later in the month. A core inflation figure at or above 2.4% would bolster expectations for further monetary tightening by the Bank of Japan (BOJ), which recently raised its policy rate to 1.25% on September 18, following a 7-2 vote.

The BOJ's recent rate hike and the anticipated increase in Tokyo's core inflation are closely linked to rising import costs, particularly due to higher crude oil prices influenced by ongoing tensions in the Middle East. These factors have contributed to upward pressure on prices in Japan, which has been compounded by a weaker yen. The central bank has indicated that it will continue to raise rates if inflation trends align with its outlook, which includes concerns over wage growth and inflation expectations.

In addition to the inflation data, Japan's August unemployment rate is expected to remain steady at 2.4%, with a jobs-to-applicants ratio of 1.18, indicating a tight labor market. The upcoming monetary base data for September will also be released shortly after the inflation figures, following a notable contraction of 15.7% in August. The Tokyo core inflation reading is crucial as it will likely influence market expectations regarding the BOJ's next policy decisions.
