U.S. Republican Lawmakers Consider Debt Ceiling Increase Ahead of New Congress

Republican lawmakers in the United States are deliberating a potential increase to the national debt ceiling during the upcoming lame-duck session following the elections. House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington has proposed a significant increase of approximately $4 trillion, which would follow a previous adjustment that raised the ceiling by $5 trillion to a total of $41 trillion in 2025.

This proposed increase aims to address anticipated borrowing needs that are expected to intensify by 2027. Additionally, Congress is facing a looming deadline for government funding, set for December 11, which adds urgency to the discussions surrounding the debt ceiling.
