Federal Reserve Governor Highlights Inflation Risks from AI and Supply Shocks

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook emphasized the growing significance of supply shocks in monetary policy during a recent discussion with New York Fed President John Williams. Cook noted that these shocks have shown surprising persistence and may require a reevaluation of traditional policy responses. Historically, the Federal Reserve has tended to overlook supply shocks, believing that tighter monetary policy could harm employment and output without effectively addressing issues like oil price fluctuations or geopolitical conflicts. However, Cook suggested that the optimal response may now depend on the specific sectors impacted by these shocks.

Cook identified artificial intelligence (AI) as a primary risk for inflation in 2027, arguing that the current AI buildout is contributing to inflationary pressures rather than alleviating them. She pointed out that this technological advancement is creating supply bottlenecks and inflationary pockets that may not resolve quickly. Her comments challenge the prevailing market assumption that AI will primarily drive disinflation through increased productivity, indicating that the current phase of investment may pose its own inflation risks.

In addition to her concerns about AI, Cook stressed the importance of maintaining anchored inflation expectations and monitoring consumer confidence. She expressed confidence that private credit is not significantly affecting financial stability. While her remarks reflect her personal views and do not represent a decision by the Federal Open Market Committee, they contribute to the ongoing discussion among policymakers regarding persistent inflationary pressures and their implications for future interest rate decisions.
