US One-Year Inflation Expectations Rise to Highest Level Since May 2023

US consumers' expectations for inflation over the next year have surged to 3.9%, the highest level since May 2023, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Survey of Consumer Expectations. This marks an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the previous month, reflecting growing concerns about rising costs across various household expenses, including gasoline, food, and medical care.

The survey indicates that expected price growth for gasoline has risen to 4.8%, while food prices are anticipated to increase by 5.5%. Medical care costs are expected to rise by 9.2%, and college tuition is projected to increase by 7.5%. These rising expectations contribute to a perception of financial strain among households, with many reporting a worsening financial situation compared to a year ago and anticipating further deterioration.

Despite the increase in inflation expectations, labor market sentiments have shown improvement. The perceived probability of job loss has decreased to 13.5%, the lowest since December 2024, and expectations for job finding have risen. However, expected earnings growth has fallen to 2.6%, significantly lagging behind anticipated inflation, leading households to expect spending growth of 5.5%, the highest since May 2023. This situation underscores the challenges facing consumers as they navigate rising costs and tighter credit conditions.
