UBS Forecasts S&P 500 to Reach 8,400 by June 2027 Amid Strong Earnings and AI Investment

UBS has projected that the S&P 500 index will reach 8,400 by June 2027, driven by robust earnings growth and significant investments in artificial intelligence (AI). This forecast follows a recent 0.6% increase in the S&P 500, marking its first record high since August and bringing its year-to-date gain to approximately 14%. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and multi-decade high Treasury yields, UBS remains optimistic about the market's trajectory.

The bank anticipates that earnings for the S&P 500 will grow by 25% this year and by 14% in 2027, with gains expected to extend beyond the technology sector into consumer discretionary, financials, and industrials. UBS also highlights the importance of defensive sectors such as health care and utilities, which are expected to benefit from structural growth. The forecast for global AI-related capital expenditure is particularly notable, with expectations for it to exceed $1.2 trillion by 2027, reflecting strong demand for AI computing and infrastructure.

UBS's analysis suggests that the current economic environment, characterized by a projected US GDP growth of 2.2% this year and 2% in 2027, can withstand modest tightening by the Federal Reserve. Historically, the S&P 500 has shown resilience, averaging nearly an 11% increase in the year following the first rate hike in previous cycles since 1954. However, UBS acknowledges potential volatility ahead, particularly if bond yields rise further or if oil prices spike due to renewed conflict in the Middle East.
