US Stock Markets Close Modestly Lower Amid Mixed Economic Data

US stock markets experienced a modest decline on August 26, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling by 113.01 points, or 0.21%, to close at 53,469.36. The S&P 500 and Russell 2000 also saw slight decreases, while the Nasdaq Composite managed to finish slightly higher, gaining 15.29 points, or 0.05%, to end at 29,224.52. This mixed performance comes as investors await key earnings reports, including from Nvidia.

Economic indicators released on the same day showed steady growth in the U.S. economy, but persistent inflation remains a concern. July's core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index matched expectations at 3.3% year-over-year. Durable goods orders rose by 1.1%, surpassing forecasts, although underlying business investment components were weaker. The second-quarter GDP estimate remained unchanged at 1.5%, with consumer spending revised higher to 3.4%.

In the currency markets, the U.S. dollar strengthened against most major currencies, supported by rising Treasury yields. The five-year Treasury yield increased to 4.367%, with a successful auction of $70 billion in five-year notes at a yield of 4.393%. Meanwhile, crude oil futures settled at $82.23, reflecting a volatile trading session, while gold prices dropped sharply by 1.44% to $4,590.76, influenced by the stronger dollar and rising yields.
