US Trade Deficit Widens in July Amid AI-Related Import Surge

The US trade deficit increased significantly in July, driven by a surge in imports related to artificial intelligence technologies. This development comes as the Federal Reserve's Governor Christopher Waller indicated that he is not prepared to raise interest rates at this time, emphasizing the need for further inflation data before making any decisions.

In related economic news, the ISM non-manufacturing PMI for August reported a figure of 55.4, surpassing the estimated 54.2, suggesting stronger-than-expected growth in the services sector. Initial jobless claims for the week were reported at 206,000, slightly above the estimate of 205,000, indicating a stable labor market.

Market reactions included a rise in gold prices, which increased by $86 to reach $4,472, while the US 10-year Treasury yields fell by 2 basis points to 4.77%. The S&P 500 index also saw gains, rising by 1.05%. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen experienced a notable increase against the dollar, with USD/JPY dropping from 159.00 to as low as 155.30, prompting speculation about potential market interventions.
