USD Declines as Yen Strengthens on BOJ Rate Hike Expectations

The US dollar experienced a notable decline in holiday-thinned trading, particularly against the Japanese yen, which surged amid expectations of a potential interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan (BOJ). The USDJPY pair fell 1.22% to 154.33, marking its lowest level in approximately six months. Over the past five trading days, the yen has strengthened by about 3.4%, driven by changing sentiments regarding BOJ policy.

Takuji Aida, an economic adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, indicated that he anticipates a 25-basis-point increase in rates at the BOJ's upcoming meeting. This shift in policy outlook is significant as it narrows the interest-rate differential between the United States and Japan, diminishing the appeal of the yen carry trade, where investors borrow yen to invest in higher-yielding assets.

In broader market movements, crude oil prices rose by 1.33% to $92.70, influenced by heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. The geopolitical situation has raised concerns about energy supplies, contributing to inflation risks and complicating monetary policy decisions for central banks. Meanwhile, European stock markets closed mixed, with reduced trading volumes due to the US holiday, while bond yields across Europe increased in response to stronger economic data and rising oil prices.
