Xos (XOS) Stock Soars 87% After Landing U.S. Air Force Defense Contract
Key Highlights
- Shares of XOS climbed 86.60% in extended trading to reach $3.90, following a regular session close at $2.09
- The company secured a prototype development agreement with the U.S. Air Force for a mobile charging platform
- The deal originated from the Air Force Global Strike Command Rapid Capabilities Division 2026 Showcase program
- Xos plans to modify its existing Xos Hub mobile battery storage technology for military deployment, with production at its Tennessee facility
- The contract extends through late 2027 and represents Xos’ inaugural venture into defense contracting
Shares of Xos Inc. (XOS) experienced a dramatic 86.60% surge during after-hours trading Monday, climbing from the day’s closing price of $2.09 to reach $3.90 following news of a defense contract award.
The company secured an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) from the United States Air Force to engineer and supply a mobile charging infrastructure designed for electrified military support equipment and vehicle fleets.
The contract emerged from the Air Force Global Strike Command Rapid Capabilities Division 2026 Showcase initiative and signals Xos’ inaugural expansion into military applications.
The partnership requires Xos to modify its current Xos Hub mobile battery energy storage platform specifically for military operations. This system offers substantial charging capacity while eliminating dependency on fixed electrical infrastructure.
Engineered for grid-independent operation in remote deployment scenarios, the Xos Hub will undergo primary manufacturing and system integration at the company’s production center in Byrdstown, Tennessee.
Work under the agreement will continue through the final months of 2027.
Transitioning from Civilian to Military Markets
Previously, the Xos Hub technology served exclusively commercial applications including fleet operators, port facilities, and local government entities. This Air Force agreement establishes a pathway into the substantial U.S. military procurement landscape.
This represents significant strategic expansion for an organization currently valued at only $29.64 million in market capitalization. The stock has traded between a 52-week peak of $8.27 and a low of $1.60. Prior to Monday’s after-hours movement, XOS shares had declined 33% over the preceding twelve months.
Challenging Financial Performance Context
This contract announcement arrives mere days following disappointing quarterly results. Xos reported quarterly revenue totaling $4.7 million, falling 61% short of Wall Street expectations. Per-share losses also exceeded projections, reaching $0.55.
In response to the underwhelming performance, the company’s single covering analyst reduced the 2026 revenue projection from $49.1 million down to $39.5 million. Even at this diminished level, the forecast suggests 4.9% year-over-year revenue expansion.
The same analyst adjusted the anticipated 2026 per-share loss to $1.99, an improvement from the previous $2.08 estimate.
The consensus price target experienced a 33% reduction to $4.00 in the wake of the earnings disclosure.
Nonetheless, analyst projections still anticipate Xos outpacing overall industry expansion rates. While the broader electric vehicle infrastructure sector faces projected annual growth of 7.1%, Xos is expected to achieve 9.9% annualized growth through 2026.
Notably, Xos achieved 27% annualized revenue growth over the previous five-year period, meaning current projections represent meaningful deceleration.
The after-hours trading price of $3.90 now approaches the updated $4.00 analyst price target.
