Apple Ordered to Pay $5.7 Billion in Landmark Patent Case

A federal jury in San Diego, California, has ordered Apple Inc. to pay over $5.7 billion in damages to Taction Technology, a company specializing in haptic technology. This ruling marks the highest patent compensation amount in U.S. history. The lawsuit, initiated by Taction in 2021, accused Apple of infringing on its patented touch technology used in devices such as the Apple Watch and iPhone.

The case was initially dismissed in 2023 but was later reinstated by the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Taction's chief attorney, Lance Yang, expressed gratitude to the jury, noting that the company had waited five and a half years for the trial to commence. The lawsuit centers on two vibration-based haptic sensor technologies that enable users to feel the device's response to their inputs, which Taction claims Apple used without authorization.

Apple has strongly contested the verdict, asserting that its haptic engine is fundamentally different from Taction's technology. The company plans to appeal the decision, arguing that tests conducted during the trial demonstrated it did not utilize Taction's inventions. The haptic engine, which was first introduced with the Apple Watch in 2014 and subsequently used in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, replaced older vibration motors. Before the appeals process can begin, the presiding judge will need to determine the final amount of damages.
