Arbitrum Suspends New Stylus Activations Amid Security Concerns
On October 2, 2026, Arbitrum's Security Council implemented an emergency upgrade that halted all new activations of Stylus contracts on both Arbitrum One and Nova. This decision was made to address vulnerabilities associated with the Stylus framework, which allows developers to create smart contracts using programming languages like Rust and C++. Existing Stylus contracts will continue to function normally, but new deployments are paused until further notice.
The emergency measures include the introduction of a new safety mechanism, known as the BoLD guard, which enhances the dispute resolution system on Arbitrum One. This guard is designed to prevent potential issues that could arise from accepting contradictory proofs during disputes, which could delay unconfirmed withdrawals if necessary. The decision to pause new Stylus activations is a proactive step to prevent unpatched WebAssembly (WASM) programs from being deployed, as these could potentially disrupt the network's operations.
The Arbitrum Foundation has indicated that it will collaborate with the ArbitrumDAO to determine when new Stylus activations can resume. While existing developers with active Stylus contracts will not experience immediate changes, those planning new deployments will face delays as the timeline for resuming activations remains uncertain. This move underscores the importance of network security and the need for immediate action in the face of identified vulnerabilities.
