Hester Peirce Leaves SEC After Advocating for Digital Assets
Hester Peirce, known as 'Crypto Mom' among cryptocurrency advocates, officially departed from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 2, 2026. Her tenure began in January 2018 and spanned two presidential administrations, during which she became a prominent voice for digital asset regulation.
Following Peirce's exit, the SEC is left with only two commissioners: Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda, both of whom are Republican appointees. No successor has been named to fill Peirce's vacant seat, which raises questions about the future direction of the agency's approach to cryptocurrency regulation.
Peirce's significant contributions included leading the SEC's Crypto Task Force, which focused on token classification and staking guidance. Her efforts culminated in the enactment of the GENIUS Act in 2025, a key piece of legislation concerning stablecoins. Despite her term officially expiring in June 2025, Peirce remained in a holdover capacity to continue influencing rulemaking until her resignation, which she announced on social media on September 25, 2026.
As Peirce transitions to academia, becoming an associate professor at Regent University School of Law in November 2026, the SEC faces uncertainty with its reduced membership. The agency's ability to advance its crypto initiatives now hinges on the actions of its remaining commissioners and the appointment of a new member.
