NEAR Intents Recovers $3.8 Million Following Exploit Incident

NEAR Intents, a cross-chain trading and settlement protocol, has successfully recovered approximately $3.8 million in USDT that was drained due to a critical bug in its smart contracts. The exploit occurred between September 30 and October 1, 2026, allowing an attacker to withdraw funds from a treasury contract on BNB Chain through multiple transactions totaling around $3.87 million USDT.

Following the incident, NEAR Intents paused its services and patched the vulnerability within an hour, aided by its SHIELD AI security layer which flagged the suspicious activity. On October 2, General Manager Alex Shevchenko issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the return of the funds, identifying the suspected exploiter and providing specific return addresses across various blockchain networks.

The suspected entity complied and returned the full amount, leading to the closure of NEAR Intents' investigation on October 4. The protocol also committed to compensating users affected by the exploit, which had temporarily halted deposits and withdrawals across 11 networks, including BSC and Polygon, for about 12 hours while repairs were made. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities that can arise in cross-chain protocols, where a single flaw can have widespread repercussions across interconnected systems.
