Chainalysis Associates $387 Million Bitget Hack with North Korea

Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis firm, has linked a recent hack of the cryptocurrency exchange Bitget, which resulted in a theft of $387 million, to North Korean cybercriminals. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing trend of cryptocurrency thefts associated with North Korea, bringing the total amount stolen by entities linked to the country to over $1 billion in 2026 alone.

The analysis indicates that the stolen XRP from the Bitget hack is being laundered through THORChain, a decentralized liquidity protocol. This method of swapping stolen assets highlights the ongoing challenges in tracking illicit activities within the cryptocurrency space, as hackers increasingly utilize sophisticated techniques to obscure their transactions.

The rise in cyber thefts attributed to North Korea underscores the regime's continued efforts to fund its activities through illicit means, particularly in the realm of digital currencies. As the global cryptocurrency market expands, regulatory bodies and security firms are under increasing pressure to enhance their monitoring capabilities to combat such threats.
